Roadside Attractions

Roadside attractions aren't everyone's cup of tea, but I like oddities, and who doesn't giggle a bit at the thought of a giant sausage. Just me and 7 year old kids? OK...moving on. Whether they are the 'Worlds Largest' or just something quirky, they are usually interesting....plus they are good places to stop and stretch on a road trip.

Here are a few I have seen on my travels. 7 year old sometimes used for scale:

Worlds Largest Bunnock. Macklin, SK

Big Sausage. Mundare, AB
Classic. Not to scale.

Worlds Largest Pysanka. Vegreville, AB

The egg rotates...

Lighthouse. Sylvan Lake, AB

Beaver. Beaverlodge, AB

Worlds Largest Oil Lamp, Donalda, AB

Cream Can, Markerville, AB

Giant Corn in Taber, AB

Taken many years ago in Vulcan, AB.
We are dressed in black on the way to a funeral.

Do you live near a cool roadside attraction? Or Worlds Largest something or other?

  1. Than Bunnock always strikes me as giggle-worthy. Like really, what is it? I know there's an explanation, but come on! And the Mundare thing reminds of a "surprise" our kid's dog left for us in the backyard. Just sayin...

  2. The large potato outside the potato museum in O'Leary, PEI, is interesting. I don't know if it's the largest..

    Love the Enterprise!

    1. I had to see the potato, I googled it. Ha! I love it!
I wish I had a better photo of the Enterprise...I have been by several times and haven't stopped again. Next time I will!

  3. I had to photograph the Enterprise when I passed through Vulcan. I haven't seen the others. There's a giant pumpkin outside Roland, Manitoba and I've been to Harvey's Big Potato outside Fredericton, New Brunswick.

  4. Here in Minnesota we have the world's largest ball of twine. And statues of Paul Bunyan and Babe the blue ox. And I once saw a giant prairie chicken, but I can't remember just where. Oh, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis has a giant spoon and cherry in their sculpture garden. I guess those are all we have for our claim to fame. :)

  5. How fun! Is Alberta known for the "world's largest" stuff? I NEVER seen anything like that here in Quebec! You'd think we'd have a world's largest poutine or something. I love the beaver!

    1. Hi Rain! I have seen them in Alberta, Sask and Manitoba. Mainly I think it's a way for small towns to attract people. Also they seem to be all over the in US as well. LOL a giant poutine would be fantastic!!

  6. I love Small Town Canada's fascination with erecting "the world's largest" whatever! The only two of your great photos that I've seen in person are the Vegreville Pysanka and the Vulcan Starship Enterprise. The Mundare (Kielbasa) Sausage needs to team up with Glendon, Alberta's Pyrogy!

    1. Lol! I like it! I have never been up to that part of Alberta where Glendon is. I wonder if there is a giant mug of beer somewhere....
