I have stopped by this school a couple times before since it is close to home and I like it. Looking back I never posted it! Weird.
Little Red Deer is a typical looking one room schoolhouse but something about makes it one of my favourites. It's also one of the older ones I have seen, opening in 1896. There aren't too many from before 1900. Little Red Deer operated until 1955 and then became a community centre. In 1941, instead of creating another school district, Little Red Deer #2 was built nearby to accommodate senior students. This school closed in 1957 and became a residence.
A local group looks after the upkeep on Little Red School, ensuring it will be around as a reminder of our local history. They also host a barbecue here each summer. I have reached out to them and should be able to get inside the school later this spring.

A pretty old schoolhouse! Beautiful shots!
ReplyDeleteThere was one not far from where I grew up that was converted into a house.
Thanks William. There is one near me that is converted to a house as well. A few of those, some became farm buildings, most are gone.
DeleteGreat example of an old schoolhouse. I have been here twice before. I have never been inside. It is a lovely spot and it great to see some of these buildings preserved.
ReplyDeleteThanks BW, I think it should be designated. Other similar schools have been. Fertile Forest, Shiloh, Verdun..
DeleteThere are some on PEI. The most famous one I’ve found was one where LM Montgomery taught for one year. It is restored and lovely to visit.
ReplyDeleteThis one you’ve visited is beautiful! A treasure. It had a long life as a school house.
Hi Marie, well that's awesome! Hopefully it's a protected building due to it's history!
DeleteI grew up in southwestern Manitoba and you know, I cannot think of any remaining one room school houses. There's probably some, however, that I don't know. Makes no difference to you, though, because that would be a helluva commute to take a photo, lol!
ReplyDeleteHi Debra, seems to me my friend who is from southern Manitoba told me that the longest running one room school was down there somewhere. I have family south of Wpg so who knows....I might do a trip there someday!
DeletePretty place.
ReplyDeleteThanks Gorges, prettier in the winter I think.
DeleteI really doubt we have any that remain
ReplyDeleteHi Adam, I for some reason have seen photos of a lot of old schools in Montana (they look a lot like the ones here) and Connecticut has a lot of really old ones that are nice and fixed up.
Delete"All is quiet on New Year's Day" :) I find it's very true about the snow absorbing the sound. I guess that's why I love being outside during a snow storm. Quiet is bliss! I don't know of any one-room school houses like that in this area. The photos are lovely! I bet it was peaceful when you visited! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Rain, it was a nice peaceful way to start the New Year.
DeleteIt is beautiful! There are none left here in Toronto and I wonder if there are many around outside the city anymore.
ReplyDeleteHi RedPat, I bet there are some out there hiding on some backroads!
DeleteThe schoolhouse is beautiful and still looks fantastic. I haven't seen one here yet but I'm sure there must be some. They probably won't be in such great shape as this one. I'll have to do a search as see what comes up.
ReplyDeleteHi Bill, I'm imagining little stone schoolhouses on a quiet lane.
DeleteWow! You come up with interesting finds. Keep them coming.
ReplyDeleteThanks Andy! I am always on the lookout for interesting things. :)
DeleteI'm sure there must be Jenn, maybe even in the city. Your Little Red School is very pretty, so happy it is being cared for, looking forward to having a peek inside 😊
ReplyDeleteThanks PDP, I am always happy when these places are cared for. Being able to see inside will be a treat too!
DeleteI love the winter when the world is in black and white and shades of grey.
ReplyDeletethe Ol'Buzzard
Me too OB! I love winter pictures, I just don't always like the winter driving to get to them lol!
DeleteA really sweet little school! Even though the bell is no longer there, the bell tower adds so much character!
ReplyDeleteI know of a couple one room school houses near me but they are in rough condition but I might try to take a few photos
Thanks Christine! I have seen a few with the bell towers, but have never seen a bell still inside. I hope they went to good homes lol. It would be cool to see if you find any!
Delete...Jenn, what gorgeous images of the wee church. I host The Barn Collective every Sunday through Wednesday, stop by sometime.
ReplyDeleteThanks Tom, this one is a school but I do have a bunch of churches you'd probably like! I'll drop by again! :)
DeleteAlberta is really charming place to visit
ReplyDeleteHi Baili, it is! Very different from where you live. Lots of snow right now!!
DeleteNice school! And it's even nicer that it's maintained. There are about half a dozen old school houses not too far away from here, mostly abandoned. But, Glen Echo School has been fully restored and Saint Margaret's Church, which was used as a school in the 1940's, has also been fully restored as a special-service country church. Redeemer Lutheran Church, which began life as Jensen School, is still in reasonably good condition.
ReplyDeleteI definitely need to explore over in your part of the province!
