Hoar Frost and More Frost

hoar·frost
/ˈhôrˌfrôst/
noun
noun: hoar frost; noun: hoar-frost
  1. a grayish-white crystalline deposit of frozen water vapor formed in clear still weather on vegetation, fences, etc.

rime1
/rīm/
noun
noun: rime ice
  1. frost formed on cold objects by the rapid freezing of water vapor in cloud or fog.
    • LITERARY
      hoarfrost.

I have mentioned hoar frost before and have had people not know that that particular kind of frost had it's own name, so there you go. It could also be rime ice which is similar to hoar frost, except for how it forms...and since I am not in the habit of watching frost form, I call it all hoar frost.

I love taking photos on these frosty days. There have been a few really good days of frost at the end of 2018 and again this last weekend.....so you know I had to go get a few photos. You have to get while the gettin's good.

The differences in both days was interesting, one was sunny with blue skies, the other was grey and almost monochromatic. It's hard to tell in the photos, but the frost was different on both days, maybe one was hoar frost, one was rime ice? I think I prefer the monochromatic landscape with the spikier frost.

  10. Oh my gosh! Incredibly gorgeous images Jenn, but oh la it looks unbelievably cold. Which of course it must be for the frost to form 😉 Suitably dressed for the cold a walk here would be quite magical 💙
